What is Carob?

Carob, also know as St. John’s Bread is harvested from the fruit of the carob tree, an evergreen member of the legume (pea) family, which grows in Mediterranean areas. Carob is low in fat, but high in fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals such as calcium. It does not contain either of the toxins caffeine or theobromine which are found in chocolate and can be fatal for dogs. Carob is also rich in tannins (organic compounds) which have a ‘binding’ effect.
